The Xiaoshan “Blueprint” of the 19th Asian Games (Hangzhou)
By Zhang Liu, Cai Kate
With all preparatory undertakings for the 19th Asian Games (Hangzhou 2022) in full swing, the production drawing of a cluster of venues in Hangzhous Xiaoshan District, which is to serve the Games as a core functioning zone, has been finalized, ready to detail the manufacturing and assembly of the “three key venues” (namely, the Main Stadium, the Aquatics Center, the Training Center) and many other projects crafted specially for the grand sports carnival.
The three venues in Xiaoshan are separately located in the Qianjiang Century Town, Guali Town, and Linpu Town, covering a total area of 582,000 square meters and involving a capital investment of 6.58 billion yuan. The three gigantic structures are among the most important infrastructural projects in the Games “New Venues” category.
Upon completion of construction, these venues can be used for intercontinental sports competitions. The Main Stadium and Swimming Pool will be a two-in-one structure that covers 397,000 square meters and has a seating capacity of 18,000 and 6,000 respectively, with the Aquatic Center designed for competitive purposes. The design of the Main Stadium meets the NBA venue design standards.
Covering an area of 185,000 square meters, the Training Center encompasses a full range of facilities for pregame warm-up and training for athletes of table tennis, badminton, weightlifting, martial arts, judo, track cycling. It also includes many other supporting establishments for health and medicine, physical training, anti-doping tests, administration, and press.
About 85% of the construction of the underground structure of the Main Stadium and the Aquatics Center has been completed, with part of the spectator stands also finished on time. Construction of the main structure is scheduled to reach the finish line at the end of 2019, and interior decoration will ensue immediately. After the unveiling around December of 2020, the venues will host a series of test matches to be started in March of 2021.
As one of the core components of the Hangzhou Olympic and International EXPO Center, the “three key venues” will further improve the functioning capacity of the Expo Center and better serve the post-Games sport needs of the public.
Having hosted more than 20 major sports competitions and cultural events over the years since its opening, the Culture and Sports Center in Guali Town will be used as the venue for martial arts and Kabaddi events during the 19th Asian Games. Reconstruction of the 35,000-square-meter sprawl, which involves a capital input of about 250 million yuan, will be completed by the end of 2020. The upgraded center will have a seating capacity of 4,600.
The “blueprint” also includes reconstruction of the Linpu Stadium located in the heart of Linpu Town in Xiaoshan. The goal is to upgrade the stadiums seating capacity to 1,494 and expand the total area to 13,781 square meters. Construction will begin in late April of 2019, and is scheduled to finish by the end of 2020. The acceptance functional test and trial operation will start at some point in 2021.
According to the organizing committee of the Games, the general goal of infrastructural undertakings for the year 2019 is to complete at least 40% of the total venue construction, finish the construction of all the underground parts and about 50% of the surface structures of the Asian Games Village, and get all preparation work ready before the yearend for the reconstruction and upgrading projects for some existing venues.
