专业硕士英语阅读理解能力提升的方法与策略
——以“Unforgettable Miss Bessie”文本为例

Ⅰ.Introducion to Miss Bessie

Year of birth:1895

Birth place:Athens,Ala

Height:About five feet tall:

Weight:Less than 100

Intellectual Background:

She graduated from Trinity School,a private school for black people operated by the Missionary Association of USA,and later she graduated from a Normal School.Actually,she had never gone to any university because she couldn’t have enough money for the tuition.

Working Experience

She taught English,history and civics at a High School in one of the states of America.She taught hundreds of economically deprived black youngsters for 44 years.

Year of Death:1980

Ⅱ.Students' Comments

“The memory of Miss Bessie and how she conducted her classroom did more for me than anything I learned in college,” recalls a teacher.“For many a time,when I was confronted with a difficult problem in classroom,I often asked myself,How would my teacher Bessie handle with it ? It seemed to me that she managed to solve the problem with love,care and laughter.” She is a humorous,well-educated,warm-hearted teacher and has a high place in the hearts of her students.She not only gives students a wealth of knowledge,but also teaches students how to learn,and teaches students how to be a valuable person.Her wisdom and great charm have left great influence on younsters.

Ⅲ.Interactions between Bessie and her students

1.Student's embarrassment and response

When “I” was afraid to be laughed at by my friends for saying in avery formal way,

Miss Bessie replied,“Don’t pay too much attention to other students’ opinion about yourself.Just do what you like to do.You will never lose your face!” So I kept on speaking just as I did previously and I built up self-confidence.

2.Student's problems and reactions

When “I” couldn't afford to buy a newspaper,

Miss Bessie inspired me to concentrate on my future career and find someway to keep up with what’s going on in the world.So “I”served as a delivery boy for the newspaper in local area and could have an access to a newspaper everyday.

3.Student's barriers and response

When “I” couldn't borrow books from the library in the small town,

Miss Bessie attempted to obtain books from the library controlled by the whites.So “I” read many books Miss Bessie urged me to and tried to memorize the things she insisted that I store away.
