“加油”,是一个在国内被人们广泛使用用来为其他人鼓劲助威或表示支持的短语,目前已被收录入最新版本的牛津英语字典。“加油”这个短语从字面上理解就是给某些引擎机器加入汽油,而中国人在比赛或竞赛中常常大声喊出这个短语来鼓励参赛者。牛津字典给“加油”的定义中提到这个短语的发音来自粤语“ga yau”,并且提到香港英语中最早使用add oil表示加油可追溯到1964年。
Add oil, a popular Chinese phrase commonly used to express encouragement, incitement, or support, has reportedly been included in the latest version of the Oxford English Dictionary. The phrase, “jia you”in Chinese, literally means inject petrol to an engine. Chinese often speak it loudly in games and competitions to encourage participants. The Oxford dictionary entry identif i es “add oil” as a translation of Cantonese “ga yau,” and cites that the Hong Kong English use of “add oil” can be dated back as early as 1964.
