A young man was getting ready to graduate from college.For many months he had admired（赞赏）a beautiful sports car in a store，and knowing his father could well afford it，he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day came，the young man awaited（等待）signs that his father had purchased the car.Finally，on the morning of his graduation，his father called him into his study.His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son，and told him how much he loved him.He handed his son a beautiful gift box.The young man opened the box and found a Bible，with

the young man’s name on it.Angrily，he raised his voice to his father and said，“With all your money you give me a Bible？”He then ran out of the house，leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business.He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family，but realizing his father was very old，he thought perhaps he should go to see him.He had not seen him since that Graduation Day.Before he could make the arrangements（安排），he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away，leaving something for him.

When he arrived at his father’s house，he saw the Bible that he left years ago.With tears，he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages.

As he was reading，a car key dropped from the back of the Bible.It had a tag（标签）with the dealer’s name and the words∶“PAID IN FULL”.Sudden sadness and regret filled his heart！

◆典句赏析

该句是由连词and连接的并列句。knowing his father could well afford it是现在分词短语，作状语；he wanted是省略关系代词的定语从句，修饰all。

2.His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son，and told him how much he loved him.他的父亲告诉他有他这样的儿子很自豪，也告诉他自己爱他。

and连接的是两个并列句。how proud he was to have such a fine son和how much he loved him在分句中均充当told的宾语；such a是常见的搭配形式，意为“如此的一个……”，后面接“形容词+名词”形式。

3.Angrily，he raised his voice to his father and said.他生气地对爸爸提高了说话的声音。

angrily是angry的副词形式，意为“气愤地”，作状语；raise one’s voice to是固定词组，意为“某人对……提高了嗓门”，后接名词或代词。
