纽约（New York）是美国第一大城市，世界第四大城市。你知道它有哪些绰号吗？

1.The Empire City 帝国城市

David Stravitz first printed this name in his photographic book titled New York， Empire City： 1920—1945. It represents New York City？蒺s wealth and resources. First president George Washington saw New York as “the seat of empire”.

大卫·斯塔拉维兹在他出版的画册《纽约，帝国城市：1920—1945》中首次将纽约称为“帝国城市”。它代表了纽约市的财富和资源。美国第一任总统乔治·华盛顿称纽约为“帝王之座”。

2.The Big Apple 大苹果

Jazz musicians called New York City “the Big Apple” in the 1920s and 1930s. They got the term from a horse track worker who said where to a horserace in NYC was referred to as “the Big Apple”.

二十世纪二三十年代，爵士乐音乐家们称纽约市为“大苹果”。他们主要是从赛马场工人口中得知的，那些赛马场工人在谈论纽约赛马地时称纽约市为“大苹果”。

3.The City that Never Sleeps 不眠之城

New York City？蒺s nickname is popularized from lyrics in the song New York， New York by the one and only Frank Sinatra.

4.World？蒺s Biggest Urban Playground 全球最大的城市运动场

NYC was named this because immigrant children played stickball（n.<美>棍球）throughout the New York streets in the 1930s.

纽约市得此名字是因为在二十世纪三十年代的时候，移民的孩子总会在纽约街道上打棍球。

5.The Melting Pot 大熔炉

The term Melting Pot was first used in publication by Israel Zangwill in his play adapted from Shakespeare？蒺s Romeo & Juliet titled The Melting Pot in 1908.

“大熔炉”这个称呼最初是伊斯瑞尔·赞格威尔在1908年的戏剧《大熔炉》里面用的，这部戏剧是他对莎士比亚的《罗密欧与朱丽叶》的改编。

6.Manhattan 曼哈顿

Manhattan was the nickname used by the Algonquin Indians when the island was first settled by the Dutch in the 1620s. The name Manhattan was quickly adopted by the settlers and today is the official name of the most famous borough（行政區）.

十七世纪二十年代，荷兰人首次在这个岛定居下来的时候，阿尔冈琴族印第安人就已经用“曼哈顿”这个绰号称呼这个岛了。定居下来的荷兰人迅速接受了这个名字。如今，“曼哈顿”已经是这个著名的行政区的官方名称了。

7.The City of Skyscrapers 摩天楼之城

New York City has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world. Many NYC buildings have had the honor of the tallest in the world at one point.

8.The Metropolis 大都会

Metropolis is the fictional name of the New York City cloned in the comic book Superman.

“大都会”这个名字来自于一本叫《超人》的漫画，漫画中的这个城市就是克隆纽约的。

9.The Financial Hub 世界金融中心

“With Wall Street leading the charge， New York City is the financial capital of the world.” enough people said.

很多人都说，只要华尔街还占主导，我们就可以说纽约市就是全球的金融中心。

10.Gotham City 高谭市

Washington Irving wrote a satire titled the Salmagundi Papers calling New York City the name Gotham in 1807. Batman and DC Comics took it from there.

华盛顿·欧文在1807年写了一部名叫《杂谈报》的讽刺作品，他在其中称纽约市为“高谭市”。《蝙蝠侠》跟DC漫画公司都是从这里引用了这个名字。
