“Ah, dear China… I will always remember you.

You are a big nation, neither selfish nor arrogant, conducting yourself with modesty while treating others with equal respect.

You defend freedom, independence and equality of all peoples and safeguard peace of mankind. We Cambodian people will remain your friends forever.”

The sentimental lyrics of “Nostalgia of China,” a song personally composed and performed by Cambodian King Father Norodom Sihanouk, bears strong testimony to the true friendship between China and Cambodia. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Over the past six decades, both countries have advanced together and forged a close friendship, setting the tone for country-to-country cooperation on an equal footing with mutual trust.

China and Cambodia share geographical proximity and cultural affinity. As early as a millennium ago, ancestors of the two peoples had already established close relations as evidenced by various historical documents. In 1958, the two countries formally established diplomatic relations in the modern era. Thanks to joint efforts of leaders of different generations of the two countries, Sino-Cambodian relations have continuously grown and benefited people in both countries. China firmly safeguards the independence, peace and stability of Cambodia, and has rendered selfless, brotherly assistance to Cambodias development of national economy. Likewise, Cambodia sincerely supports China and, with a sense of justice, has stood with China on issues concerning core interests and major concerns and joined China in working to maintain regional peace, stability and development. The two countries have become very good neighbors, dear brothers, close friends and trusted partners.

In the 21st Century, the alignment of Chinas Belt and Road Initiative with Cambodias Rectangular Strategy for growth is creating new opportunities for development of Sino-Cambodian relations. Recent years have brought frequent exchange visits between high-level leaders. Both King Norodom Sihamoni and Prime Minister Hun Sen have visited several Chinese cities. In October 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a state visit to Cambodia, during which leaders of both countries exchanged in-depth views on bilateral cooperation and regional and international issues of common concern and agreed to further solidify the traditional friendship between the two countries, deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and build a community of shared future as mutually trusted friends and partners.

According to traditional Chinese culture, 60 years represent one complete life cycle. As one cycle comes to an end, a new one full of hope and energy begins.
