80岁琼瑶“浴火重生”重新出版作品全集

今年4月是白羊座“言情女王”琼瑶80岁生日。年初,她对之前所有出版过的作品做了个大动作,在台湾和大陆分别整理推出最新版的全集,多达65部作品。繁体中文版交由台湾春光出版社,简体中文版则由中南博集天卷文化传媒有限公司与湖南文艺出版社联合出版——已经出版的简体版第一辑叫做“光影辑”,包含琼瑶早期代表性的6部作品,《窗外》《一帘幽梦》《在水一方》《烟雨濛濛》《庭院深深》和《几度夕阳红》。

日前,通過电子邮件往来琼瑶接受了笔者的采访。80岁的她坦言目前的生活非常忙碌,“除了忙着校对繁体版的全集,还要补写全集中的《鬼丈夫》和以前绝版的《不曾失落的日子》,还想完成一些未完成的工作,但依旧和文字工作相关。”在她眼中,65部作品“经绞尽我的脑汁,费尽我的时间,写得我心力交瘁,每一部都有如我亲生的儿女。”

关于作品:繁体版已经陆续绝版简体版不尽如人意

去年,琼瑶因是否给失智丈夫平鑫涛插鼻胃管与三名继子女发生争执,激烈程度比琼瑶剧还琼瑶。当时,琼瑶希望医生尊重他的个人意愿,不做任何插入式治疗,让他能够自然地结束自己的生命。而平鑫涛和前妻生的子女,则坚决主张给父亲插上鼻胃管延续他的生命。为此她写下了一封“人生中最重要”的长信:“活到这个年纪,已经是上苍给我的恩宠。所以,从此以后,我会笑看死亡。”

随后,琼瑶将自己的所有作品版权从丈夫的出版公司皇冠出版社收回。“鑫涛晚年多病,出版社也很早就移交给他的儿女。我照顾鑫涛,变成生活的重心。尽管如此,我也没有停止写作。我的书一部一部地增加,直到出版了65部书,还有许多散落在外的随笔和作品,不曾收入全集。”琼瑶坦言,当鑫涛失智失能又大中风后,她的心情跌落谷底。“鑫涛靠插管延长生命之后,我几乎崩溃。然后,我又发现,我的65部繁体字版小说,早已不知何时开始,已经陆续绝版了!简体字版,也不尽如人意。”

“我想我的作品深受读者喜爱的原因在于‘真实。我用真情实感写出来,读者用真实情感去阅读、去体会,这是真正打动人的地方。”所以在她晚年的时候,琼瑶希望能够再度整理出版她的全集。

“在各大出版社争取之下,最后繁体版花落‘城邦,交由春光出版。简体版是‘博集天卷胜出。两家出版社所出的书,都非常精致和考究,深得我心。”琼瑶甚至用“浴火重生”来形容这套书的出版——“它们都是经过千锤百炼、呕心沥血而生的精华!那样,我这一生,才没有遗憾!”

关于写作:14岁就陆续有作品在报章杂志上发表

“生于战乱,长于忧患”的琼瑶,从小和两个弟弟,跟着父母,从湖南家乡,一路“逃难”到四川。“6岁时,别的孩子可能正在捉迷藏,玩游戏。我却赤着伤痕累累的双脚,走在湘桂铁路上。”在那兵荒马乱的时代,她已经尝尽颠沛流离之苦。“这使我早熟而敏感,坚强也脆弱。”

1949年,琼瑶和家人到了台湾。那年她11岁,童年结束。父亲在师范教书,收入微薄。她和弟妹们,开始了另一段艰苦的生活。也在这时,琼瑶疯狂地吞咽着让她着迷的“文字”。“《西游记》《三国演义》《水浒传》……都是这时看的。同时,也迷上了唐诗宋词,母亲在家务忙完后,会教我唐诗。”

14岁初二时,她又迷上了翻译小说。那年暑假,在父亲安排下,琼瑶带着便当,整天泡在师大图书馆里。“我看遍所有翻译小说,直到图书馆长对我说:‘我没有书可以借给你看了!这些远远超过你年龄的书,你都通通看完了。”

爱读书的她,很早就开始尝试写作,14岁就陆续有作品在报章杂志上发表。成为家里唯一有“收入”的孩子。“这鼓励了我,尤其,那小小稿费,对我有大大的用处,我买书,看书,还迷上了电影。电影和写作也是密不可分的,很早,我就知道,我这一生可能什么事业都没有,但是,我会成为一个‘作者。”

关于原著:可以读到更多影视剧中没有的细节和情节

琼瑶的作品主张爱情至上,主人公大多都是纯情、美丽、勇敢的女生。比如《窗外》中的江雁容,从外表到性格都是典型的琼瑶女主,文艺、美丽、执着,与大自己20几岁的老师康南相爱,这在如今看来也是很勇敢的事情;依萍,可能不够温柔,但她有一种更加凌厉的美。

这次简体版出版的第一辑“光影辑”,包含琼瑶早期代表性的6部作品:《窗外》是琼瑶首部长篇爱情小说;《一帘幽梦》则是爱做梦的失意女孩被成熟大叔拯救的故事,男主角费云帆号称中国版白瑞德;《在水一方》是才情女子爱上落魄文人的故事。成功改编成电视剧的《烟雨濛濛》,书写女性的独立和救赎。获得第九届台湾电影金马奖优等剧情片奖原著小说《庭院深深》,则是庭院深处深藏多年的爱与救赎的故事。《几度夕阳红》讲述一个女孩的身世之谜,6个人的爱情枷锁。

受琼瑶作品影响最深的大约是70后。在那个物质精神生活都相对匮乏的年代里,琼瑶笔下这些曲折、浪漫、青春、纯情的故事,经常能带给人强烈的情感波动。像是萧索秋季中的一抹亮色,给无趣的生活带来生机。80后、90后的人对于琼瑶的了解,则大多数是通过影视作品和网络。

事实上,影视作品为了戏剧冲突与收视效果,会有夸张的成分在里边。但是,当我们再来翻开原著时,会发现很多情节、对话等都有所差别。比如熟知的电视剧《情深深雨濛濛》改编自小说《烟雨濛濛》,在电视剧中,加入了杜飞与如萍的感情线、可云和方瑜与尓豪的感情线,使得电视剧更具戏剧性。但是,这两条线在原著《烟雨濛濛》中则并没有,原著对于依萍与书桓的感情线,以及依萍与陆家的纠葛着墨更多。而电视剧中依萍与书桓的感情经历了种种波折,最后走到一起。但在原著中,如萍、依萍、书桓的人物走向完全不同。

關于爱情:我现在懂了爱是无法天长地久

“这世界上有千千万万的人,每个人都有自己的一本小说,或是好几本小说。我的人生也一样。”应该说,琼瑶正是个为爱而写作的人。她的初恋,后来就成就了她的第一部小说《窗外》,发表在当时的《皇冠》杂志。那时,她帮《皇冠》杂志已经写了两年的短篇和中篇小说,和发行人平鑫涛也通了两年信。“我完全没有料到,我这部《窗外》会改变我一生的命运,我和这位出版人,也会结下不解的渊源。我会在以后的人生里,陆续帮他写出65本书,而且和他结为夫妻。”

《窗外》出版于1963年。那年,她第一次见到鑫涛。“后来,他告诉我,他一生贫苦,立志要成功,所以工作得像一头牛。”琼瑶浪漫地用牛和织女来形容丈夫与她的爱情——“‘牛不知道什么诗情画意,更不知道人生里有‘轰轰烈烈的爱情。直到他见到我,这头‘牛突然发现了他的‘织女,颠覆了他的生命。至于我这‘织女,从此也在他的安排下,用文字纺织出一部又一部的小说。”

很少有人能在有生之年,写出65本书,15部电影剧本,25部电视剧本。也正因为这样的高产,琼瑶没有时间见人,也没时间应酬玩乐。她亦不喜欢接受采访和宣传。“于是,我发现大家对我的认识是:‘被平鑫涛呵护备至的,温室里的花朵。一个不食人间烟火的女子!”听完这样的言论,琼瑶都是一笑了之。然而就是这样的相濡以沫,也逃不过时间的轮回。琼瑶坦言:“我不会否认写过的爱情,但只有一句我想否认,那就是:‘爱可以到天长地久。”

面对丈夫的重病入院,写尽人间至情至爱的琼瑶也感慨:“我现在懂了,爱是无法天长地久,因为死亡终究会使人分离。当相爱的两个人都不在了,也没有其他人会在意他们的地久天长。”

同时她也想和年轻人说,爱情是有阶段的,不要以为永远是浓情密意,那是不可能的。“爱情从猜测情意归属的酝酿期,再到甜蜜的热恋期,若走入婚姻,两个来自不同家庭背景的男女自然会有适应期,如果适应得很好,这家庭就会走入温馨期,老夫老妻后,更是从爱情转往亲情,最后则是死亡带来的离别期;但若双方适应不良,那就是风暴期了。”

Qiong Yao, a Taiwan-based novelist well known for her romance novels in the last several decades across China, celebrated her 80th-birthday in April 2018. She is reprinting a latest complete collection of her 65 novels. They are going to be published in the island province by Chunguang Publishing House and jointly published on the mainland by two other publishers. The first six novels that represent the early phase of her novelist career have already been republished in simplified Chinese on the mainland.

I contacted Qiong Yao through email and she agreed to answer my questions. The interviews were conducted through emails.

The 80-year-old novelist is busy with proofreading the complete collection in the traditional Chinese, to be published in Taiwan. She is going to add new chapters to and in the complete collection. She is also going to finish whats unfinished. “The 65 books took all my time and all my energy. Every one of them is like a child to me,” recalls the novelist.

Qiong Yao was suddenly thrown into the spotlight last year when a dispute broke out between her and the adult children her husband had in his other marriage. The clash looked more dramatic than the plots in her novels. She hoped doctors would respect her husbands wish and decision before he lost the ability to think and she said she and her husband objected to any intrusive methods. The step children disagreed. She wrote a long public letter to explain how the situation came to this stage.

Over decades, her novels were published by a publishing house operated by her husband. When her husband was unable to work, his adult children took over the publishing business. After the angry dispute, she withdrew all the books from the publishing house. She suffered terribly and felt extremely unhappy about the dispute. Then she discovered that the 65 books in traditional Chinese had all run out and were no longer available in bookstores. Moreover, pirated editions in simplified Chinese were a rampage on and off the internet as well as on the mainland.

So she made up her mind to republish them. Major publishers competed for the business. Eventually she chose one publisher on the island and two publishers on the mainland.

Different people came to know about Qiong Yao through different channels.

Television series brought Qiong Yao to those born in the 1980s and the 1990s. The most influenced audiences are those born in the 1970s. In the years when life was relatively short of luxuries, Qiong Yaos romances with such dramatic twists and innocent people written in such a style attracted them most.

In order to achieve dramatic effects, the television series tended to make stories more complex and added a lot that are nowhere to be found in the original novels. In some cases, characters in both original novels and television adaptations end up in totally different situations.

“There are hundreds of millions of people in the world and everyone has one novel or more novels about oneself. So is my life,” recalls the novelist. Her first story was based on her first love and published in 1963 in a magazine operated by her husband. More short stories and novelettes followed and she and Ping Gantao, her would-be husband wrote letters to each other for two years. “I didnt expect that the first story would change my life and my life would be entangled so intimately with the publisher. I had the foggiest idea that I would write 65 novels for him and marry him.”

In these decades that spanned her prime years, she wrote 65 books, 15 film scripts, and 25 television adaptations. She was so productive in writing that she didnt have time for anything else from the outside world. Some people are under the impression that her husband protected her so well that her life was like a flower in a greenhouse. She doesnt bother to change the impression.

In the interview, she goes out of her way to talk about her new understanding of love. “I dont have second thought about what I have written about love except that love is forever. Now I understand that love can never be forever. Death separates. When the two are both dead, no one else really cares about the forever part of love.”
