Zhang Junsheng passed away at 83 on February 19, 2018 in Hangzhou. I interviewed him eight times over years, the last being toward the end of November 2017 when I visited him at his office on the second floor of the office building of Graduate School on Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University. I reported the latest progress of the preparative work in establishing Museum of Historical Data of Chinese Journalism on the campus of Zhejiang University. He embraced the project whole-heartedly.
Zhang Junsheng was born in Changting County, known for its ‘red past, in Fujian Province in 1936, and spent his childhood and teenage years in his hometown that once hosted the first county-level ‘revolutionary committee launched by Mao Zedong in the Central Soviet Area in 1929. A huge fan of Lu Xun and a literature enthusiast, Zhang Junsheng had always had his heart set on majoring in literature and becoming a writer someday, but changed his mind amidst the nationwide wave of the countrys first ‘five-year construction. That year, he entered the Mechanical Engineering Department of Zhejiang University, where he met his wife Yang Huiyi, who also started her first year of study in the university. Throughout his undergraduate years, Zhang Junsheng proved himself not only a hardworking, successful student but also a literature activist with amazing organizing ability.
Zhang became a teacher of Zhejiang University after graduation in 1958. In 1983, he began serving as Vice Secretary of the CPC Hangzhou Committee, officially forging his way into the political circle after 25 academic years.
Zhang Junsheng joined the Hong Kong branch of Xinhua News Agency as a core member of the branchs publicity department on October 1984, and became Deputy Chair of the Hong Kong office three years later, in charge of news, publishing, technology, culture, education and sports.
Zhang was appointed as the news spokesman for a news spokesman system launched by the Hong Kong branch to counteract the violation of Sino-British Joint Declaration on the part of Chris Patten, who served as the 28th and last Governor of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1997. Zhang won the hearts of the Hong Kong public as well as of the cultural and political celebrities such as Tung Chee-hwa and Rita Fan (President of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong), for his eloquence, aplomb and charisma. A token of the friendship between Zhang and Rita Fan was a couplet written by Zhang especially for her before moving back to Hangzhou. “When I get irritable at work, Id look at the couplet and it makes me calm down,” Rita Fan recalled.
In his years of serving various posts in Hong Kong, Zhang Junsheng also made a lot of friends from the cultural circle of Hong Kong, including Sir Run Run Shaw, to whom Zhang presented a ‘Special Contribution Award on behalf of the Ministry of Culture in 1997, and Jin Yong (Louis Cha), whose kung fu novels brought Zhang immense joy.
On 1 July 1997, sovereignty over Hong Kong was officially transferred from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China, marking the end of 156 years of British colonial rule. Zhang Junsheng was one of the proud witnesses of the handover ceremony held at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Center.
Zhang Junsheng was also a major player behind the successful merging of four universities into the new ‘Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. It took Zhang and his team only about four months to get all preparative work done for the huge project that aimed to elevate Zhejiang University into the world-class universities legion. Zhang made the best of his influence and connections in Hong Kong, bringing in a lot of donation and inviting Jin Yong to head the Faculty of Humanities of the university.
Zhang Junsheng retired in July 2004, but his contribution to the development of Zhejiang University continued into his later years. In 2014, the friendship between Zhang Junsheng and Jin Yong blossomed into a book dedicated to the writer and published by Hongqi Press in celebration of the 90th birthday of the writer.
