endprint

The Reader:
From TV to Printed Books
By Xu Chenguang
First screened in 2016, The Reader is a sensational CCTV blockbuster book-reading program. People from all walks of life are invited to share their stories with the nation and then read an excerpt from a book. So far two seasons have been produced and screened.
In August 2017, China Publishing Group, CCTV and China National Library joined hands in launching a set of books named after the sensational TV program. A press conference was held in Beijing on August 13 to promote the books.
The three-book paperback set was published by Peoples Literature Press, based on the 94 poems, essays and books read by 70 celebrities in the first season. Ninety-four texts are by poets and novelists such as Su Shi, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Hemmingway, and Tagore. In addition to the paperback set, a one-book edition for school students, a hardcover edition of 6 books, and a luxurious edition for collectors will be published soon.
The blockbuster success of the television program lies in the perfect combination of interesting human stories and literary classics. The 70 celebrities came from all walks of life and their stories reflected colorful personalities, life experiences and achievements. The excerpts they read explored the world where they live and love and where literary classics echo their experiences.
A few things can help understand the popularity of the television program. During the second season of The Reader, reading kiosks traveled to big cities across China. A reader stepped into a kiosk and read an excerpt from a book and told his or her story. In the cities where reading kiosks were installed, people queued up. Someone even stood in a queue for nine hours before his turn to tell his story and read an excerpt. Some readers queued up through the night before the day the three-book set was launched in Shanghai Book Festival in August.
Dong Qing, the producer and hostess of the program, explained why she thought it was necessary to launch this set of books. “Without the treasure of literature, The Reader would have been impossible. After the excerpts were read in the program, it is appropriate to make the whole texts available to our audience.”endprint
The three-books are characterized by some unique features. For each text in the set, a brief biography explains who the author is and a brief discussion explains the writing, be it a book, a poem, an essay, from which the excerpt comes from, and another brief biography explains who the reader is. The set has 154 photos. On the back of each book is a QR code for installing a mobile phone app. With the app, the reader can scan each of the 154 photos and access a related video footage of the program.
“Limited by the length of the program, most guests in the television program read only excerpts. The set of the three books help readers to learn more about the original texts. The books are based on the television program but they offer extensive reading opportunities,” noted Xiao Liyuan, vice editor-in-chief of Peoples Literature Press and producer of the set.
“The books bring The Reader from television screen back to books. This can help the public read more. The books will help contribute to the promotion of our national culture,” pointed out Yin Hong, a professor with Journalism and Communication College of Tsinghua University.endprint
