The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) has identif eid multiple new pulsar stars in the Milky Way and two of them have been conf rimed by international observatories, the National Astronomical Observatories of China announced in Beijing on October 9. This was the first such discovery made by Chinese scientists.

The two pulsars, named J1859-01 and J1931-01, are 16,000 light years and 4,100 light years from Earth with rotation periods of 1.83 seconds and 0.59 seconds respectively. They were discovered on August 22 and 25 when FAST was drift-scanning the southern galactic plane.

Located in a karst landform in southwest Chinas Guizhou Province, FAST has helped Chinese scientists make a number of new discoveries since it started trial operation in September 2016.endprint
