01. HKSAR chief executive visits Singapore, Thailand to boost HK-ASEAN ties
August 2, 2017 (Xinhua) — Chief Executive of China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor embarked on a visit to Singapore and Thailand on Wednesday, hoping to further boost ties between the HKSAR and ASEAN. This is Lam’s first visit outside the HKSAR as the chief executive. Choosing the two ASEAN member states as the destination for her first visit was because that “ties between China's Hong Kong and ASEAN are very close”,with ASEAN being the second largest goods trade partner of China's Hong Kong, Lam told the media before departure.
02. Sri Lanka invites more Chinese investors
August 2, 2017 (Xinhua) — Sri Lanka called on more Chinese investors to invest in the island country, saying that China had invested more than US$ 52 million in the country in 2016 alone. Bathiudeen said that mega Chinese projects,such as the recently-signed US$1.1 billion Hambantota Port agreement between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and China Merchants Port Holdings and the US$ 1.4 billion Colombo Financial City project, were immensely bene fi cial for the island country.
03. Chinese tourist arrivals to Cambodia up 40 pct in H 1
August 4, 2017 (Xinhua) — Approximately 530,000 Chinese tourists visited Cambodia in the fi rst half of 2017, representing an increase of 40 percent compared with the same period last year, according to a Tourism Ministry report. Chinese holidaymakers accounted for 20 percent of the foreign tourists visiting Cambodia during the six-month period, the report said,adding that China topped the chart among the top 10 arrivals to Cambodia, followed by Vietnam and Laos.
04. China, Kazakhstan feel port’s bene fi ts
August 4, 2017 (China Daily) — The logistics terminal in Jiangsu province's Lianyungang Port, built by China and Kazakhstan, has served as an important platform to improve economic cooperation, according to officials. As the first project between China and the countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, the Lianyungang logistics terminal has imported and exported 7.77 million metric tons of goods since it went into operation in 2014. Goods imported and exported from January to July this year increased by 49 percent over the same period last year.
05. China, ASEAN agree to build higher level of strategic partnership
August 7, 2017 (Xinhua) — China and ASEAN nations expressed satisfaction with the achievements made in their strategic partnership during the last 15 years, and agreed to further enhance cooperation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) made the pledge at a meeting in Manila. Wang congratulated ASEAN for its 50thanniversary,saying that China is happy for ASEAN’s development and achievements while expressing best wishes for ASEAN's better and faster development in the next 50 years.
06. Chinese-built mega railway begins construction in Malaysia
August 9, 2017 (Xinhua) — A mega railway to be built by China was offi cially launched in the Malaysian city of Kuantan on Wednesday, marking a milestone for China-Malaysia ties after China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative. At a cost of 55 billion ringgit (US$ 12.83 billion), the 688-km East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will help upgrade public transportation infrastructure in the east coast, said Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak when inaugurating a ground-breaking ceremony of the project.
07. GE to close part of New York facility,move work to China
August 10, 2017 (Xinhua) — General Electric (GE) announced that it will close its manufacturing facility in Rochester, New York and move the work to China. GE told Xinhua that “the assembly of the electronic boards at this facility is not core to GE’s manufacturing capabilities” and that the company has already contracted 80 percent of these products to external partner suppliers. The company said that it will close the site by June 2018 and that about 90 employees will be a ff ected by the decision.
08. The Belt and Road Initiative guides SMEs abroad
August 11, 2017 (China Daily) — More small and mediumsized enterprises are trying to grasp opportunities related to the Belt and Road Initiative, according to China Association for Small & Medium Commercial Enterprises (CASME) and public relations agency Porter Novelli. “CASME used to be a grassroots association seldom participating in international activities. However, since the fi rst half of last year, especially since May this year when the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation was held, more associations like CASME in countries such as the United States, Russia and Singapore have contacted us for cooperation,” said Ren Xinglei, senior vice-chairman of CASME.
