Analyses of Common Grammar Mistakes in High—school English

【Abstract】English has an important position in the basic education stage as a language subject. English teaching requires students to have the abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing in high school. If students want to learn these skills well, they should not only memorize vocabularies, but also master grammar knowledge. This paper illustrates the importance of English grammar for learning English and lists the common grammar mistakes. It also introduces some skills of learning English grammar.

I. The Importance of English Grammar in High-school English

Grammar reveals the inherent laws of the English language. It is necessary to master the grammatical rules of this language to master this language. Senior high school students not only master the rules of word formation and sentence, but also improve their abilities of using English. And it is easier for students to understand English and improve students English learning efficiency after mastering grammar knowledge.

II. Examples and Analyses of Common English Grammar Mistakes

There are a lot of grammar investigation forms in high-school English. The following are some kinds of common grammar mistakes and analyses.

Usage of Nonfinite Verb

【Correction】Peter will spend two weeks reading and prepare for his final examination.

Analysis: “Prepare” should be changed to “ preparing” in this sentence. The “preparing” and the “reading” in front are the coordinate constructions.

【Multiple-choice】George Washington was considered ______ one of the greatest of all American presidents.

A. being B. been C. be D. to be

Analysis: The answer is D. Infinitive is the complement to the object in this sentence.

When students deal with the usages of nonfinite verb, they should memorize the nonfinite verbal forms and fixed collocation forms. Then they should analyze certain context and choose the right answer.

Usage of Conjunction

【Correction】The parents still dont know if or not their children have arrived at Beijing by plane.

Analysis: “If” should be changed to “whether” in this sentence. The term “Whether” followed by “or not” is a fixed usage.

【Multiple-choice】We hope to go to the beach tomorrow, but We wont go _____ it s raining.

A. if B. when C. though D. because

Analysis: The answer is A. The adverbial clause is introduced by “if”.

When students deal with the usages of conjunction, they should distinguish this conjunction connect a word or a sentence first. Then determine whether the usage of this conjunction conforms to the meaning of the sentence.

Usage of Clause

【Correction】I also enjoyed the evenings when we spent together.

Analysis: This is an attributive clause. The predicate verb “spent” should take an object in this sentence. Remove the “when” or changed “when” to “that”.

【Multiple-choice】—Dad, what did your doctor say?

—He advised me to live _____ the air is fresher.

A. where B. in which C. in the place where D. where

Analysis: The answer is D. The adverbial clause of place is introduced by “where”.

When students deal with the usages of nonfinite clauses, they should pay attention to the distinction between different types of clauses. Judge the types of clause, not only according to conjunctions, but also according to the structure and meaning of the sentence.

III. Some Skills of Learning English Grammar

Take Notes

Poor writing is better than good memory. In the English class, students should take notes to follow the teacher. While doing English exercises, they should also develop the habit of taking notes. Students can search and review difficult points by notes easily.

Analysis Carefully

When students meet complex sentences, analyze the structures of main clause and clause first. Then determine the missing components. and choose the right answer.

Learn to Summarize

Students should consolidate knowledge by a lot of practice and discriminate common grammar mistakes. If they do that, they will avoid making the same mistakes in the future. Should be good at induction, not rote learning.

Grammar knowledge plays an important role in learning High-school English. Students should be good at summing up the common grammatical mistakes, so that we could no longer make similar mistakes. Now, In the globalization of the development of science, the trade contact and economic cooperation between China and others has become closer. We should strive to study English to adapt to changes in the economy.
