Over either side of the Yangtze River hangs a touch of fog, and moist air spreads with the fragrance of wintersweet. All these scenes vividly depict the uniqueness of Chongqing’s winter. Standing in the Jian Ye Gang, Long Men Hao, Nanan District, Dai Qianfeng has overlooked the Yuzhong District for so many times that he could not remember the fi gure exactly.“You’re here again.”The old neighbors knowing Dai Qianfeng always warmly greeted him like that. He always nodded his head with a smile, and then turned to capture his memory about Chongqing with his camera.
Since 1985, Dai Qianfeng has shot nearly 100,000 photos of old Chongqing. He measured the city’s breadth and thickness with his footsteps, recording and capturing historical images of the city with camera. Even captured from the same angle, the old Chongqing presents a different image under his camera. He believes that the most beautiful photo are collected in the most familiarplaces. He said,“If you just want to record the changes of Chongqing with your lens, one year is enough. But I have photoed Chongqing for 30 years because I enjoy this aesthetic process as my subject creation.”
“I hold such both aesthetic views of its history and soul from the vicissitudes of this mountain city, the mystery of the fog city, the detour and graceful beauty showing in this three-dimensional city.”Dai Qianfeng saidthat Chongqing is the city of two big rivers, which are the Yangtze River and Jialing River, running through many districts like Yuzhong District, Jiangbei District, Nan’an District, Beibei District and so on. This giant city simply offers a paradise for visual artists with its ups and downs.
Dai has photographed many images about old Chongqing like the residential buildings, anti-war institutions, old residence of celebrities, foreign embassies and consulates, all of which were built in the 1930s, Caiyuanba, Ciqikou ancient town, Hong Ya Cave, Danzishi which lived 20 years ago and so on. All of his shootings have had a chord with the netizens and the public. Therefore, as more public attention are paid to him, he wants to display his collections. “Since I would also like to end the theme of‘old Chongqing’, the photography will be called‘My Old Hometown City’,which both implies my hometown and the shootings of the past city which has become a story and a history.”
Li Kecheng runs a art book bar called Time Flavor in Chongqing. He is a fan of Dai and a native of Chongqing who has been living in the Hill Lane of South Gimen from an early age. He told,“Dai helps us to keep our memories of the old streets and lanes. He was doing something meaningful and we will help him with our sincere efforts.”In June 2015, to help the Dai’s publish of his photography, the book bar launched a public offering in the crowd-funding websites and Wechat public platforms. In just one month, more than 400 thousand yuan has been raised.
In November 2015, his photography including more than 1,000 works (upper and lower volumes) was published. Even Li Kecheng also felt surprised about the success that about a thousand of the fi rst printed 1500 volumes were sold in a short time. Notably, many are to buy for personal collections.“Even though readers sometimes are not to buy one, they come to the bookstore and have a long-time look for a few hours to recall the memories of old streets and lanes in the childhood.”
If Dai’s long-time shooting for 30 years is to record a city by himself, the publish of My Old Hometown City have lit the enthusiasm of thousands of Chongqing people to write about the city’s memory.
Readers in the bookstore and on the Internet wrote the sincere words for this collection like, “Memory is meaningful in the continuity of life so that what we can do is to keep our memory when our walked roads gradually disappear; we hope to fi nd the road to home in the photos of this photography; it acts as a key or a password that can open the door tohome...
There are more than one thousand stories derived from My Old Hometown City. The eldest reader, called Liu Dayou who was born in 1918, handwrote some words, describing his youth memory about Jiaochangkou and people’s love to life at that time. His action is full of positive energy; the youngest reader who was born in 2010 painted his hometown, Chongqing in his view.
“The famous director of Chongqing, Zhang Yibai, and the writer Hong Ying gave us a draft, telling their own stories about Chongqing. Li Kecheng said that they selected a hundred stories from which they would edit a book in the name of TheTime Spent in My Old Hometown City. And it will be published on the“World Reading Day”in June 2017 and mark the 20th anniversary of Chongqing Municipality.
