In the world of construction, buildings have the capacity to make a major contribution to a more sustainable future for our planet. The OECD estimates that buildings in developed countries account for more than 40% of all energy consumption over their lifetime. Add to this the fact that for the first time in human history over half of the world's population now lives in urban environments and it's clear that sustainable buildings have become vital cornerstones for securing long-term environmental, economic and social viability.

The LafargeHolcim Foundation (previously known as Holcim Foundation) aims to promote and develop sustainable construction at national, regional, and global levels. In its "flagship" LafargeHolcim Awards for Sustainable Construction (previously known as Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction), China has received more prizes than any other country. The competition offers USD 2 million in prize money per three-year cycle – and is currently open for entries.

Te previous Global Gold winner, Francis Kéré will present the Awards competition at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Tuesday 20 December 2016. His project in Burkina Faso integrates social and environmental performance in the design for the school in the village of Gando. Passive cooling during oppressive summer heat creates an indoor climate conducive to learning by routing air through subterranean tubes, planting vegetation, stackeffect air currents, and using double-skin roofs and façades. Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré, is himself a son of the village headman of Gando where his latest school complex for more than 1000 children is being constructed.

By awarding innovative, future-oriented and tangible sustainable construction projects from around the globe, the LafargeHolcim Foundation unites diverse global expertise and increase awareness of the critical role of the built environment in sustainability. The LafargeHolcim Awards is conducted across five world regions: Europe, North America, Latin America, Middle East Africa and Asia Pacific. Tsinghua University in Beijing and Tongji University in Shanghai are part of an international network of affiliated universities that support independent juries to evaluate submissions on the basis of the "target issues" for sustainable construction. The fifteen projects that receive LafargeHolcim Awards Gold, Silver or Bronze in these five regions are then qualified for the competition for the Global LafargeHolcim Awards.

Previous winning projects from China include CHANG Qing's "Design for a clan settlement's regeneration" in Hangzhou, WANG Shu and LU Wenyu's "Five scattered houses" in Ningbo; ZHANG Yue's "Sustainable transformation of a rural community" near Beijing, as well as student projects on water remediation, urban density, encouraging public transport and supporting tourism.

The 5th International LafargeHolcim Awards competition therefore examines buildings at an advanced stage of design, but that have not started construction before July 4, 2016. The 5th International LafargeHolcim Awards competition remains open for entries until March 21, 2017 at www.lafargeholcim-awards.org/intro.
