Shopping centers are not only for shopping, but more and more they are becoming community hubs. Highpoint Pop Up Park offers new ways of talking, sitting, watching and playing. Located at one of the busiest entry to the center, the degraded public plaza had offered very little to visitors.
The small plaza; with its cracked insitu concrete, stains from food, drinks and cigarettes and lack of seating contributed very little other than a walkway into the centre. The pop up park was designed to be quickly and cheaply installed with easily accessible materials such as form ply and a standard stud wall framing system. In addition, the seating elements, with their laminate fixings and colours, contribute to a unique identity for the space.
There are raised platforms with soft synthetic turf framed by customized seating details. These seating elements or sloped terraces face a central and safe play space with moveable play objects. The whole design is integrated seamlessly with current site functions.
The overlapping programs creates new connections between groups in the community. Children are now running, hiding, following and jumping right next to a group of youths just hanging out and being cool.
The pop up park is a demonstration of how these spaces can be reconfigured to become much more. This is strategic urbanism, a project driven from Center Management. Designed well and to last, longer than initially planned.

FANG Musheng: In 2016, many friends working in the same profession in Beijing whined to me that the good days for architects and landscape designers had gone, while I expressed optimism about it – not because there is new land not yet developed that waits for us to design, but because our existing city environment is really terrible, which calls for more innovative designs. This project, before the reconstruction, was a plain, dull and haphazard affair. Based on practical considerations and their own imagination, the designers brought new vitality to the space. Their "magic power" of bringing good out of bad gives us, as designers, pride and cause for optimism.
DUO Ning: Shopping mall was once the cathedral in the commercial society. But now the followers are placing orders online.
According to Linus Torvalds who is the inventor of Linux, all of our motivations fall into three basic categories, they are "survival" "social life" and "entertainment".
At the very beginning, we shopped for basic survival needs. And then shopping mall was created for the need of efficiency in a more commercialized society. As for now, shopping the activity itself becomes the byproduct of entertainment experience.
In this project, the passage which links the parking lot to the shopping center is transformed into a public leisure space. There is nothing too impressive. In China, the whole shopping center is about to be transformed into a playground.
