Japan Airlines CFO, Norikazu Saito
Japan Airlines has adopted measures that accommodate Japan's rapidly aging labor workforce, and improving labor efficiency through the use of technology has helped cut working hours. CFO Norikazu Saito said, "We let employees carry tablets [and] smart phones so that they can work outside the office or at home if they wish to," Saito explained. As for the future of the company, which has undergone a series of restructures in recent years,Saito said profitability and efficiency were renewed points of focus.

And having – like many others in the property game – realised that the 1990s and Noughties saw the sector over-exposed itself to the banks. “I felt we should diversify the sources of finance,” he says. “I wasnt the only one doing this, it was good common sense. It was also good business sense because you dont want all your eggs in one large basket. We ended up with a mixture of flexible bank financing, ‘revolving facilities that can move up and down, and long-term fixed rate debt. ”

The company is now moving towards a much brighter future, as it begins to focus on attracting a much younger client base. “The biggest challenge for us is that weve got very loyal, long-standing customers, so now were trying to capture the attention of young people. One of his main aims is to try and blend “innovation with our tradition, the heritage, and our client services”, which he believes is a mix that cant be found among the competition. “We take the glass half-full approach. We analyse what we have and see how we can build on it, rather than focusing on what we dont have.”
