We Should Care What Students Care

As a headteacher in charge of a class, I always cant help being strict. One day, I said to my students,“I dont know why Im working harder on your grades than you are.” Then, one of them asked me instead of answering me, “We dont think our English teacher cares about us. Are you caring our grades more? ” Im so sad to hear that. Sometimes weve tried our best in class but the students still dont understand us? Why?
Maybe we havent realized what students care are love, fun and recognition (认可). Every young teenager wants to be appreciated (欣赏), looked after and trusted. When you first step into the classroom every day, your happy smile and passion (激情) will make you get closer to students. After all, students always like easy-going and humorous teachers.
And only the teachers who love their lives and have good wishes or dreams for their students will actually understand what their students really need.
One day, when I got in the classroom, I saw a girl looking very sad. I walked to her and said,“I really want to cheer you up, but I prefer joining you and having a big cry. You see, I lost 100 yuan this morning.” On hearing that, the whole class burst into laughter. Sometimes, when students gave me excellent answers in class, I would say“Give me five” or shake hands with them, saying,“Thats the very thing I want to say”. At that moment, students could feel greatly honored.
In fact, knowledge and grades are not what students care most. They need our smile, humor, understanding and appreciation. Each student is a unique individual (個体) who comes to school for hope, interest, joy, and development. Lets care what students care!
