A recent study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops (手提电脑).
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility (清晰度). But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers did experiments to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said.
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood what the teachers taught.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists did worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers report said, “While more notes are beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.”
In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

Several years ago, my husbands boss invited us to his home one weekend. I was excited but a little nervous about the weekend. The boss had a fine home on the waterway, and any of his cars cost more than our house.
In the evening, the boss took us to the finest restaurant in the city. I knew I would never have the chance again, so I was enjoying myself greatly.
As we were about to enter the restaurant, the boss who was walking slightly ahead stopped suddenly, looking down on the ground for a long, silent moment. There was nothing except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped. Still silent, the man reached down and picked it up. He smiled and put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure.
Why would a rich man like him take the time to stop and pick up single penny? Throughout dinner, the scene always appeared in my mind. Finally, I couldnt stand it any longer. I asked if the penny he had found had been of special value.
A smile crossed the mans face as he held the penny out for me to see. I had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?
“Look at it,” he said. “Read what it says.”
“One cent?”
“No, keep reading.”
“In God We Trust?”
“Yes!I trust in God. God dropped a message right in front of me, telling me to trust him? I think it is Gods way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!”
When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk myself. I stopped and picked it up, smiled and read the words, “In God We Trust.” I realized that the things I had been worrying about would get better.
