Think about this： if your dog is stolen by a family that feeds her and gives her shelter， she would still miss you， at least for a certain period of time. She would likely remember you for a number of years. The happiness of dogs when they reunited with their human family after years of separation①separation 英 ［sepə'reɪʃ（ə）n］ 美 ［，sɛpə'reʃən］ n. 分离，分开；间隔，距离because the dog got lost， or the person traveled， or was at war， has been documented②document 英 ［'dɒkjʊm（ə）nt］ 美 ［dɑkjəmənt］ n. 文件，公文 vt. 用文件证明. You can search You Tube for this type of joyful reunions.

Dogs are social animals， just like humans， and they have strong attachment③attachment 英 ［ə'tætʃm（ə）nt］ 美 ［ə'tætʃmənt］ n. 附件；依恋；连接物；扣押财产to their pack， which in the case of domestic dogs， is the human family. The only reason not to call this strong bond "love" is if you think that "love" should be a word reserved for a human feeling and not an animal's feelings. I personally think that if the behavior is similar， the evolutionary④evolutionary 英 ［，iːvə'luːʃənərɪ］ 美 ［，ivə'luʃənɛri］adj. 进化的；发展的；渐进的bases for the behavior are common， and the neural⑤neural 英 ［'njʊər（ə）l］ 美 ［'nʊrəl］ adj. 神经的；神经系统的；背的；神经中枢的/endocrine⑥endocrine 英 ［'endə（ʊ）kraɪn； -krɪn］ 美 ［'ɛndəkrɪn］ n.内分泌；激素；内分泌物 adj. 内分泌的；激素的correlates⑦correlate 英 ［'kɒrəleɪt； -rɪ-］ 美 ［'kɔrəlet］ vi. 关联vt.使有相互关系；互相有关系n. 相关物；相关联的人 adj. 关联的are also common， it's totally fi ne to call it love.

I love my dogs and they love me and the rest of our family. They love my sons to pieces even though they almost never feed them or walk them. But they do cuddle⑧cuddle 英 ［'kʌd（ə）l］ 美 ［'kʌdl］ vi. 拥抱；偎依；舒服地贴着身睡vt. 拥抱；亲热地搂住；抚爱地拥抱n. 搂抱，拥抱with them， and now that my sons are adults， they go berserk whenever they come back home！ There， I did it， I used the word "love".

想想这种情况：如果你的狗狗被某家人偷走了，而那家人为你的狗狗提供吃住，你的狗狗仍然会想你，至少在某一段时间内会。很可能在许多年以后依然记得你。那些曾经因走失、主人远行或战争而与主人分离的狗狗，多年以后与主人家相聚时，依旧表现出喜悦，这都被记录下来了。你可以搜索YouTube 找到这类久别重逢的视频。

同人一样，狗也是群居动物。狗对团体有着强烈的依恋。对于家犬，这个团体就是人类家庭。之所以不把这种深厚的情感称作爱，你认为是因为“爱”这个字，专属于人类情感，而不是用来描述动物情感的。但我个人觉得，如果行为相似，行为进化的基础相同，并且与行为相关的神经或激素的反应也相同，那么完全可以把它称作“爱”。

我爱我的狗狗们，它们也爱我和其他家庭成员。它们很爱我儿子，即使我儿子几乎从未喂过它们或者去遛过它们。但他们会搂抱这些狗，即使我儿子现在成年了，只要回到家里，他们和狗狗仍会打成一片！所以，在这里，我用“爱”这个字眼。
