Long Studio, located to the north of the Joe Batt's Arm community in adjacent to the Fogo Island Inn, was one of the largest and also the first to open officially among the six studios commissioned from Todd Saunders by the Forgo Island Arts Corporation. Stretching prominently on the rocky shore, its tubeshaped body plays a critical role in enhancing the architectural identity of the island by drawing on local fishermen's dwellings and traditional buildings. Such geometrically simple yet visually powerful creation is representative of Saunders' architecture and bears a distinctive meaning to the Fogo Island project.
The main construction material is native wood, with rough-sawn spruce and spruce planks used on the exterior and the interior respectively, while the whole structure is anchored at its western end by a concrete foundation. The building accommodates both external and internal functions in its overall longitudinal disposition, terminating on the land side by a protected terrace. On the opposite side is a full-length glass window with a commanding view of the North Atlantic Ocean. In addition to ameliorating natural illumination, this smart device of framed view also creates a liaison between the clean, bright ambience of the interior and the aweinspiring presence of nature. Other openings such as carefully placed skylights help to save abundant wall and floor space for the inhabitant to use.
Seasonal factors are given full consideration in the spatial layout. The covered front porch and the open central courtyard are to be enjoyed in spring and summer, respectively, while the structure's enclosed main body provides both comfort and protection in autumn and winter. Facilities such as kitchen, lounge and bathroom, as well as workspace for art activities are all supplied internally. The studio is completely self-sufficient thanks to its use of Solar panel power and effective treatment of waste, grey water and rainwater. □ (Text by LIU Chen)

HAO Lin: A comfort of solitude
Todd Saunders's design series on the Fogo Island, as I see, is art to celebrate the nature. Given the small size of the project, a distinctive character is made prominent on site through the impressively modern and abstract manner, while its surroundings are left intact. However, it is by no means a simple treatment of a box; the best of the design consists in several parts: the trapezoidal cut expands southward views, while auxiliary spaces are concentrated on the north side as a buffer; black-and-white design not only blends well with the outside natural landscape, but also makes the interior appear larger. The design is finally summarized by the two triangles, which enhance a continuity between the exterior and the interior, and provide a solitary and seclusive yet comfortable shelter in changing seasons. Paradoxically, in the nature, perhaps the less and smaller the man-made, the grander world it may embrace.
JIANG Peiming: The architect would have contented himself with designing just one building on this charming little island, let along 7 buildings (there are 4 studios built) ! Being one of them, the Long Studio features pure and simple form, space, materials and colors, which however create an atmosphere of infinite delight that calls to mind the famous Mies quote "Less is more". Crawling on the ground and facing the sea, it dexterously fuses with nature – a true confession of the architect's admiration and affection for nature.
