Hawking, 72, suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) when he was only 21. Doctors thought he would only live for two years after diagnosis.
The disease does not affect the mind but slowly makes it impossible to move any part of the body. At one point his speech was so unclear because his mouth muscles were so weak that it was hard to understand him.
He lost his ability to talk when he caught pneumonia in 1985. Doctors made a small hole in his neck and placed a tube in his windpipe to help him breathe. In 1997 he received a computer with a special program that allowed the user to choose words with a hand clicker. Once a sentence was complete, the program would say it in a robotic voice.
Now, Hawkings electronic “voice” has become his trademark. He can no longer use his hands, but can still choose words with his cheek.
“My suitable role would be a villain in a James Bond film,” Hawking told Wired Magazine in an interview.“I think the wheelchair and computer voice would fit the part.”
The physicist and black hole expert has lent his voice to a cartooned version of himself on The Simpsons. He has appeared on Star Trek, and starred in a special video part of the last Monty Python show in January.
Do you think he would make a good Bond villain?
