Childrens Day is celebrated on the 14th of November in India. Before 1959, Childrens Day was celebrated in October. It was first celebrated in 1954, as decided by the UN General Assembly. It was set with the aim of celebrating childhood and providing children a better life.
The reason why the date was moved from October to November was because of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indias first Prime Minister. He had great love for children and committed his life to Indias independence. Therefore, people made his birthday Childrens Day.
The day is marked with a lot of activities for children. Schools organize events and activities that their students can enjoy, but there are a lot of children who cannot really have fun on this day, especially the homeless ones.
Thus, while the purpose of this day is to provide children a better life, maybe one can make a difference in a childs life by doing something special. Lucky children and poor children can exchange beds for a night. This will help them know each others world better. Donating clothes, toys and books is also a good way to help the poor kids. Another way of celebrating this day differently would be to have teachers or parents allow their students or children to organize a party for some poor children. If this were done in every neighborhood, imagine how many smiles there would be across the nation.
Celebrating Childrens Day is about giving children the right to enjoy their childhood and grow into healthy and educated citizens of the country. If you can teach your child the value of sharing what they are lucky to have with others, then not only will your child grow into a responsible human being, but other children will also benefit a lot.
