Smoke billows from a warehouse for hazardous goods in the northern port city of Tianjin on August 13 following explosions the previous night. As of late that day, the accident had left 50 dead, including 17 firefighters, and 701 hospitalized.

The warehouse is owned by an international logistics company that handles toxic chemicals.

Firefighters, soldiers and doctors raced against the clock to save the injured after the blasts occurred. President Xi Jinping promised a thorough investigation of the accident, with open and transparent disclosure of information.
