China Aids Yemen Evacuation
2015-07-09
Political unrest and clashes have raged in Yemen since earlier this year. The Chinese government places great importance on the safety of its citizens abroad and wasted no time in helping these citizens leave Yemen. Since the end of March, nearly 900 citizens from China and other countries have been evacuated in five batches within seven days by Chinese naval fleets. Among them, 621 are from China while 276 are from 15 other countries, including Pakistan, Ethiopia, Singapore, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Germany, Canada, and the U.K.
This is the first time Chinese naval combat ships have anchored at a foreign harbor to carry out an evacuation.
During the evacuation, Chinese crew members took good care of those on board by helping them with luggage, providing sufficient food, and offering reassurance. Djiboutis Foreign Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, said he was “deeply touched” because “China helped not only its own citizens, but also those from other countries.” He added that Djibouti would offer assistance in any further evacuation procedures.
The rapid evacuation demonstrates Chinas growing strength and its humanitarian values.endprint
