[HTH]四、阅读理解([STHZ]20小题,每小题2分,共40[ST]分)[HT]
阅读下面四篇语言材料,然后按文后要求做题。
[JZ][WTHZ]A[WTBZ]
Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a wonderful old man who loved all kinds of small animals, such as spiders, insects, butterflies and so on.
One day while walking through the woods, the nice old man found a cocoon (茧) of a butterfly. He took it home.
A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it [WTHZ]struggled[WTBZ] to make its body out of that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared it could go no farther.
Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors (剪刀) and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then got out of the cocoon easily.
But it had a swollen (肿胀的) body and small, shriveled (枯萎的) wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge (扩展) to be able to support the body, which would contract(收缩) in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings.
It never was able to fly.
What the warmhearted man in his kindness did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Natures way of forcing fluid (体液) from the body of the butterfly into its wings, so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any difficulties, it would be bad for us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.
46. What things did the old man like EXCEPT this one in the passage?
A. Spiders.[DW]B. Insects.
C. Butterflies.[DW]D. Flowers.
47. How did the butterfly get out of the cocoon according to the passage?
A. It got out of the cocoon by itself.
B. The cocoon was broken.
C. The old man helped it get out.
D. Another butterfly helped it.
48. What does the underlined word “struggled” mean?
A. 挣扎[DW]B. 休息
C. 困倦[DW]D. 打斗
49. When did the old man decide to help the butterfly?
A. When the old man saw it.
B. When the small opening appeared.
C. As soon as the old man got home.endprint
D. After the butterfly struggled for several hours.
50. What can we learn from the story?
A. We shouldnt help others.
B. We cant get over difficulties.
C. Difficulties are helpful in our life sometimes.
D. Helping others is a good thing.

[WTHZ]Making Music with Water[WTBZ]
Have you ever tried making music with glasses or bottles filled with water? I bet your favorite band hasnt. Experiment with your own special sounds by turning glasses of water into instruments, make some cool music and find out how it works.
[WTHZ]What youll need:[WTBZ]
Five or more drinking glasses or glass bottles.
Water.
Wooden stick such as a pencil.
[WTHZ]Instructions:[WTBZ]
Line the glasses up next to each other and fill them with different amounts of water. The first should have just a little water while the last should be almost full, and the ones in between should have slightly more than the first.
Hit the glass with the least amount of water and watch the sound, then hit the glass with the most water, which makes the higher sound?
Hit the other glasses and see what noise they make. See if you can get a tune going by hitting the glasses in a certain order.
[WTHZ]Whats happening?[WTBZ]
Each of the glasses will have a different tone when you hit with the pencil. The glass with the most water will have the lowest tone while the glass with the least water will have the highest. Small [WTHZ]vibrations[WTBZ] are made when you hit the glass, and this creates sound waves which travel through the water. More water means slower vibrations and a deeper tone.
51. How many glasses or bottles are needed in the experiment according to the passage?
A. Two.[DW]B. Three.

[JZ][WTHZ]C[WTBZ]endprint
Its only natural to be confused by the world around us. It is a very complicated (复杂的) and surprising place sometimes! And youll never understand whats going on around you unless you ask yourself “why” every now and again.
[JZ][WTHZ]Why [WTHZ]do [WTHX]divers[WTHZ] (潜水员) need headlights?[WTBZ]
Sunlight only reaches down to 200 meters below the surface of the ocean. This “sunlit zone” is where all sea plants and most sea animals live. From 1,000 meters onwards, it is totally dark.
[JZ][WTHZ]Why do I chatter when Im cold?[WTBZ]
When you are cold, your muscles (肌肉) contract quickly to try to warm you up. This is called shivering. Your teeth chatter as the muscles in your jaw (颌) move.
[JZ][WTHZ]Why is the sky blue?[WTBZ]
Sunlight looks white, but it is really made up of all the colors of the rainbow. When it arrives on Earth, it hits particles (微粒) in our air that “shine” blue. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.
[JZ]?
Adding soap to water makes the surface of the water much“stretcher (有弹性的)”. It spreads out enough for you to blow air inside it. Its a bit like blowing up a very delicate (易破的) balloon.
