Chi Li, a famous woman writer in China, rarely visits bookshops anymore. Instead, she buys books online. She believes it is difficult to find what she calls “real” books on shop shelves now.
“Most of the books in shops are tool books to help people to pass a test or earn more money. In my eyes, they are not real books,” said Chi Li.
“I rarely go to bookshops now because I cant find what I want to read. Many of the books are written in the same style and have the same contents1, such as advice on how to be rich and successful.”
Chi Li was pleased to see that Premier2 Li Keqiang set out proposals3 to encourage a love of literature4 in the Government Work Report he presented at the two sessions5.
“We will ensure that more excellent works are created for people to enjoy. And we encourage a love of reading in all our people to build a nation of reading lovers,” Li Keqiang said.
Chi Li said, “It is good that this has been highlighted6 in such a high-level document7. It means our leadership has realized the importance of reading.”
However, she remains concerned about the types of books people read though several local governments have set up libraries. “It doesnt mean local people can enjoy real reading,” she said.
“These governments did not carry out any researches before setting up libraries. And they had no idea about what books the local readers like or need.”
“Then, fewer people will be attracted to read in the libraries. If this is so, it will be hard to create a love of literature.”
Chi Li added, “Reading good books can be helpful to the cultural makeup of a nation and personal development.”
