Shao Jingdou (left), a 101-year-old veteran who fought against Japanese invaders during the Battle of Taierzhuang in 1938, shakes hands with 102-year-old Jiang Siyu, who worked as a reporter during the same battle, on April 8 at the historical battle site in Zaozhuang, east Chinas Shandong Province.

A number of veterans and their descendants gathered there to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Chinese victory in the battle, a major victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45). At the time, it greatly galvanized the Chinese people in their efforts to fend off the invading Japanese army.
