Whether you love him or hate him, 31-year-old Chinese writer and director Guo Jingming knows how to attract viewers to the theater. His third film, Tiny Times 3, earned more than 100 million yuan on the first day of release.
Guos movies are all based on his popular novels about four Shanghai girls who like dating, fashion, and shopping.
In 2009, he said that the secret to his success was linking the desires of young people to their insecure feelings. “Todays young people dont understand the life described by older writers,” said Guo. “Young people like my work because its by a writer of their age about things very close to their life.”
His novels and films are full of luxury brands partly because he himself is living a luxury life. Yet, he doesnt seem to be interested in serious topics like history and politics.
Opinions about Guos films are divided.
A Weibo user criticized Guo. He said, “Many people in China are still poor, with too little to eat and not enough money to afford school. Celebrating a luxury lifestyle could encourage many bad social habits, from waste to a hopeless view on the future.”
Another Weibo user praised the film, “We all share many feelings. You quarrel with the best friends and sometimes hate them, but you wont leave them when they are hurt. Tiny Times shows these common feelings.”
