Mi Heng was a very talented litterateur in the Three-Kingdom Period. He wrote the famous Ode to the Parrot, which was thought to be one of the ancient-style odes in China. It was said that Mi Heng wrote the ode that had over 1,000 words in one breath without any pause, consideration and corrections.
His talent is envied as much as being appreciated. When he was taking shelter against the war in Jingzhou, he was set to meet the Warlord Cao Cao upon the recommendation from Kong Rong and Yang Xiu, both of whom were famous litterateur at that time. However, Hua Xin and other scholarministers envied Mi Hengs talents. Mi Heng also carried the arrogance of the talent and despised Hua Xin and those who threw themselves into the warlord, which added up the rancor between them.
Before Cao Cao was ready to meet Mi Heng, Hua Xin and others slandered Mi Heng in front of the Warlord. Mis- guided by their blasphemies, Cao Cao was very cold to Mi Heng when he met him. Mi Heng was greatly offended and he took opportunities to humiliate Cao Cao and his men. Cao was very angry yet he controlled his rage. Instead, he sent Mi Heng back to Jingzhou to bypass his greetings to Liu Biao, the ruler of Jingzhou.
However, Mi Hengs arrogance offended Liu Biao as well, who did not kill him but sent him to Huang Zu, the magistrate of Jingzhous neighboring city Jiangxia. This time, Mi Hengs arrogance cost his own life – Huang Zu, who was not as cunning as Cao Cao and Liu Biao, could not stand the humiliation Mi Heng gave to him and beheaded him, ending his life and his literature skills.
His friends Kong Rong and Yang Xiu felt sorry for his death and the loss of his talent. They sighed that there would be no article as splendid as Ode to the Parrot and only Mi Heng could finish that masterwork with certain easiness.endprint
