COMPANY STRATEGY / GOAL / PROFILE
Our design commissions cover the whole spectrum of architecture and design from the intricate detail of individual pieces of furniture through to the large scale of infrastructure and city master planning. Within this broad range our experience and expertise includes the design of private homes, space planning, interior design, hotel developments, retail developments, residential developments, office developments, university colleges, sports stadia, industrial buildings, hospitals, railway stations, bus terminals, airports and waterfront redevelopments.
Throughout all our projects the initial starting point is the human scale and the natural human need for warmth, care and variety in the environment.
Our designs naturally reflect our clients requirements, the significant feature of the specific site and its surrounding context. Every project is specially analysed, investigating the multitude of concepts that can arise to ensure each scheme is developed to its full potential and will attain its own identity.
In rural setting the building and the landscape should form a conscious unity, where we will mould the surrounding landscape to the design of the building. In an urban setting a dialogue between our new building and the existing neighbourhood is essential.
The building in the city should respect and emphasise the urban grid and the urban space it boarders.
Diversity is the key to all our projects. The uppermost importance in a project or a mixed use development is the need to meet the requirements of the inhabitants, to provide the opportunity for a blend of diverse uses, and achieve the right balance between density of built form and the openness of public space.
‘A successful development can become a place of adventure, where you can meet all types of people who have come to explore and experience the range of activities and public facilities that are created. Even the smallest project are interesting as they always constitute part of a greater whole.’
ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE
The practice has a blend of youth and experience consisting of architects, interior architects and urban designers supported by teams of model builders, architectural technicians and administrators. Ours is a cosmopolitan practice, accommodating a wealth of cultures and languages, currently engaged in numerous dynamic projects throughout Europe, Arabia and Asia.
Our staffing level has remained at a stable 50 employees during the last 10 years due to a steady rate of incoming commissions. The office benefits from many long standing clients and recurring commissions, however we also acquire new projects as a result of successful participation in both open and invited competitions.
Employees work in teams from 2 - 25 people depending on the size and nature of the project. Each project is designed simultaneously from the inside and the outside.Interior architects and model builders along with the architects form part of the initial design team, and remain with the project through to completion.
Each project is assigned a project leader who will be the main point of contact with the client, will be responsible for the project administration, and the design and delivery of production information. As deputy manager of the practice Øyvind
Neslein serves as the co-ordinator of project leaders, maintaining an overview on each project to ensure all requirements are delivered. An external board, and the financial manager, Bente Ulvøy Johansen, supervise the company’s economy.
Quality assurance is a primary concern for the practice both in the design and the delivery of each project. The office has an internal management structure, with a ‘leader group’ meeting weekly to ensure each project has the resource and expertise that it requires. Our in-house building structures division ensures that previous experiences are brought forward to establish structurally efficient and functional details, whilst a competence division ensures that all employees have access to courses to keep up to date on changing legislation, new materials, and advancements in computer based design and graphics programmes. Additionally we have an employee group specifically to ensure employee health and welfare.
The organisation of the management and administrative structure of the office allows Niels Torp the freedom to operate primarily as a design architect, directly involved in the conceptual design and creative development of each project.
A wide range of media is used to provide a fast and effective production of drawings and images for each design project, and we continuously assess and develop the process of our presentation techniques. Competitions, feasibility studies and conceptual designs may use a mix of models, freehand sketches and computer based mixed media, however once a project reaches the detailed proposals stage the drawings will be generated using Microstation or 3D-Revit. Each employee has their own computer workstation and we also have an IT and 3D-visualisation division headed by Rune Holden and Christian Frisell. The 3D visualisations are generated using 3D studio, form Z, advanced systems and sketch up, which can give photorealistic graphics.

THE ARCHITECT NIELS TORP
THE ARCHITECT NIELS TORP has an unstoppable curiosity for people and society. Together with his lively and unpredictable creativity this has resulted in new architectural standards, in Norway and internationally, within a wide range of tasks.Torp’s triumph in the Nordic competition for the SAS headquarter outside Stockholm in 1984 established him as a rejuvenator of the of fi ce as a building form.
