Volunteer Programs Create Cultural Buzz in Ruian
By Zhang Yi, Li Feiqin
Rui'an is a coastal city in southern Zhejiang, reputed for its dynamic private economy. The city of economic prosperity now boasts a cultural phenomenon: quite a few ‘cultural volunteers' have organized themselves into troupes and teams and visit local communities in vast countryside to entertain rural population and factory workers in Ruian. Their performances enrich local cultural life.
The cultural prosperity took shape in 2009 when Li Ren swore in as the chairman of the city's Federation of Literature and Art. A passionate and highly motivated man just turned 40, he was determined to bring the cultural undertakings of the city to a new level.
Li and his colleagues decided to take stock of the local cultural landscape.
They did field researches, seminars and brainstorming. And they heard a lot of complaints about the lack of cultural activities open to people in the hilly areas of Rui'an and they heard a lot of complaints about the shortage of funds for cultural programs.
Li and his colleagues decided to do something about the shortage of cultural programs across Ruian. They set up an organization and enlisted cultural volunteers to hold programs ans shows across Ruian.
There are groups of various professionals and specialists at the city level. Specialized in music, dance, fine arts, calligraphy, literature and photography, they hold regular events across Ruian. At the town level across the city, there are twenty-one teams that regularly hold various cultural programs and events that attract local residents. And eighteen local troupes have joined the volunteers. They coordinate their schedules with other volunteer teams and cater to diversified needs and demographical requirements.
Li and his colleagues hard work has proved rewarding. The number of registered cultural volunteers had topped 1,560 in the first half of 2012 and more than 5,000 signed up to receive appropriate training . At the town level, at least 30,000 residents took part in cultural programs at regular intervals. These programs cover a wide range. Ruian boasts a large number of overseas Chinese. They come back regularly for home visit and many have noticed the great change taking place in the city's colorful cultural life.
“People's passion turned out unexpectedly fierce. Many people have to wait for half a year for their turn to join the training classes, due to space limit,” says Bao Yongyuan, general secretary of the federation, “People are crazy about calligraphy, painting and photography.”
“I have learned much more than I expected from my teacher Chen Xiangyang, not only about how to take good pictures but also about the importance of becoming a better person than I was and what dedication means,”recalled Song Dejin. The photography classes supervised by Chen Xiangyang has turned the 52-year-old Song from a rookie into an award-winning photographer.
Dancing has not only restored the health of Zhang Meifeng, a 48-year-old housewife, but also brought self-confidence and enormous happiness into her life. Music and dancing has become an indispensable part of the life of many housewives like her in Rui'an. Zhang became one of the first dance teachers trained by the Jinhu volunteers for the opening of the village's 'dancing arena' in the fall of 2012. A fund-raising campaign led by her harvested about 200,000 yuan.
Zhang Meifeng is not alone. In Dongshan, thousands of people are taking dancing lessons from Song Huazhu and Chen Xuemei.
“Professionally, I could have used my skills to make money; but I prefer the volunteer work and I feel good about such devotion,” said Chen Mei'e, “What I am doing is making thousands of people happier and healthier, which feels a lot more beautiful than going to big cities to get awards and certificates.”
The volunteering spirit of Rui'an was featured in the July 2 issue of Zhejiang Daily in 2012. Motivated by such media recognition, photography volunteers organized a trip to 28 villages in Rui'an and took 760 pictures for the most impoverished families that year.
Volunteers and various cultural programs in 2013 in Rui'an have already benefited at least 50,000 people.
