Many years ago, my uncle owned a restaurant at a small airport in Illinois. My mother was the assistant manager and I was the hostess. One afternoon, my mother and I went to a restaurant for lunch. Our waitress, Debbie, was so sweet that we took an immediate liking to her, and my mother offered her a job at my uncle’s restaurant at once. Debbie accepted.

We invited her to our home for dinner that evening and during our conversations with her, we learned that she had never married and that she had no boyfriend. She told us that five years before while on a flight back east, she met “her pilot” and that it was love at first sight.

She was very nervous as she was boarding the plane and the pilot was standing in the doorway greeting passengers. He must have noticed how afraid of flying she seemed, and he struck up a conversation with her. They spoke less than ten minutes, and he told her firmly he would fly her safely to her destination. She told us it was “love at first sight”, and we told her there was no such thing. Although she never saw her pilot again, she never forgot the feeling she had in her heart when their eyes met.

Mother and I had a plan. Since she was so in love with her pilot, we decided to fix her up with one of the many single pilots that came into the restaurant to eat in between flights. We approached John, one of the pilots, and told him about Debbie. He agreed to meet her for a dinner date on one of his nights off.

We sat him at a nice table with candle light and fresh flowers. When Debbie arrived, we walked her to the table to introduce her to her date. As we approached, Debbie stopped dead in her tracks, tears in her eyes, her hand went to her heart, and though I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, she said, “My pilot, it’s my pilot!” He stood dumb and embraced(拥抱)her.

We later learned that he, too, had fallen in love with “his passenger” five years ago on that flight back east.

Every April I am worried about the same thought—spring might not come this year. I’m feeling down, as I was during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine 15 years ago. “Just wait,” a neighbour comforted me. “You’ll wake up one morning and spring will just be here.” Exactly, on May 3 that year I awoke to a green morning. Hills, sky and forest showed purple, blue and green.

There is an old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark branches spread wildly. Each spring its flowers come out in great numbers so that the air is filled with the pleasant smells.

Until last year, I thought I was the only one noticing this tree. And then one day, I set out with tools to remove a few wild branches. No sooner had I arrived under its boughs(树枝)than neighbours opened their windows and stepped outside. These were people I nearly knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I were an unexpected visitor coming into their personal gardens.

A neighbour shouted as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now.” Soon half the neighbours joined me. It struck me that I had lived here for five years and only now I was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed winter days. It was as if the old apple tree were gathering us under its branches for the purpose of communication and sharing wonders of spring.

Just the other day I saw one of my neighbours in a store. He said how this winter had been especially long and that he had not seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, for a while, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune(修剪)that apple tree again.”

68. Why did all the neighbours come out when the author went to the tree?

A. They wanted to enjoy the flowers and smells of the apple tree with the author.

B. They were worried that the author would cut down the tree.

C. They wanted to enjoy spring.

D. They wanted to communicate with the author.

69. The author expects spring to come because he wants to ___ .

A. enjoy the beautiful flowers of the apple tree B. cut off the wild branches of the apple tree

C. enjoy the beautiful spring morning D. communicate with his neighbours

70. The passage is mainly about ___ .

A. the relationship in a neighbourhoodB. the author’s feeling in spring

C. the argument about an apple treeD. the author’s loneliness in a neighbourhood

第四部分 写作(共三节, 满分45分)

第一节 任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的词。

An apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training that combines workplace experience and classroom learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman—someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice’s time is spent in a classroom environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a full-time undertaking.

One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that hire them pay for school. What’s more, it offers apprentices an “earn while you learn” opportunity. They usually start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a pool of well-trained workers to draw from.

Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night, which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off(下岗)if business for the employers is slow.

Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recognized and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the companies they apprenticed with; others go on to different companies or become self-employed contractors.
