Millennium Hotels and Resorts

For his outstanding leadership and excellent achievements in China’s hotel industry, Charles Lai, Vice President of Sales and Marketing in Greater China of Millennium Hotels and Resorts, was awarded the 2009 International Hotel Industry Top 10 Leaders Award by Hotel Professional Executive at the 2009 International Hotel Investment Forum held in Jinan, the capital city of east China’s Shandong Province.

As a veteran hotelier, Lai has extensive international working experience on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. He is a seasoned professional with more than 28 years of experience in sales and marketing, food and beverage, hotel operations, brand representation and global distribution. The most recent project that Lai was involved with Millennium Hotels and Resorts, before his China position, was developing a new brand for the group Studio M Hotel, an urban, sleek and lifestyle hotel that caters to “social business travellers.”

The Hotel Executive Awards are annual awards issued by the Hotel Professional Executive trade magazine in conjunction with local and international sponsors, to honor leading hoteliers and tourism experts for their outstanding contributions to the deluxe hotel sector and overall service excellence in the tourism industry.

During the forum, Lai made a thoughtful presentation titled “New Opportunities for Hotel Investment in China,” and also made a brief introduction to the group’s newest hotel brand, Studio M, which is scheduled to open in Singapore in April 2010. A modern refuge for a new generation of savvy business and leisure travellers, Studio M, epitomises chic and elegant living.

InterContinental Beijing Financial Street

Thomas Ni was appointed Executive Assistant Manager of InterContinental Beijing Financial Street, effective January 3. With this appointment, Ni will overlook the operations involving room maintenance, food and beverage and engineering resources for the hotel.

Ni joined IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) in 2008 as General Manager of Holiday Express Beijing Guangshun. His previous hospitality experience includes various management positions with Sino-Swiss Hotel Beijing and Movenpick Hotel Beijing.

China World Hotel, Beijing

China World Hotel, Beijing highlights its efforts to step up its food safety management systems, according to corporate food safety guidelines from Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and international food safety requirements, by becoming the first Shangri-La hotel in the Chinese mainland to successfully acquire the ISO 22000 food safety management certification for the hotel’s kitchen team from Moody International. In addition to the ISO 22000 certification, the hotel also successfully passed stringent audits for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) re-certification.

ISO 22000 refers to the internationally recognized standard for food safety management systems and quality food safety principles for organizations operating within the food supply chain. HACCP employs internationally recognized standard principles for food safety risk analysis as well as the identification, evaluation and control of hazards considered significant for food safety. For hotel kitchens, these principles involve an entire range of activities, from food purchasing to storage and food preparation while also requiring extensive staff training and coordination from other hotel departments, such as engineering and food and beverage service operations.

A member of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group, China World Hotel, Beijing is compliant with the group’s food safety management requirements, with its entire kitchen team successfully completing training and certification through the Shangri-La Food Safety Management System.
