单数变复数,意义大不同

英语中有些单词看上去只是由名词的单数变成了复数,但实际上单词的意义发生了很大的变化,不信快来看看吧!

1. air和airs

air意思是“空气、大气”。We must breathe fresh air. (我们要呼吸新鲜空气。)

airs意思是“架子、神气”。put on airs(摆架子)

2. arm和arms

arm意思是“臂膀”。Tom held his father in his arms. (汤姆用双手抱住了他的父亲。)

arms意思是“武器”。Does the police force carry arms? (警察部队带武器了吗?)

3. blue和blues

blue意思是“蓝色”。She was dressed all in blue. (她全身衣服都是蓝色的。)

blues意思是“烦闷、忧郁”。be in the blues (没精打采)

4. cloth和clothes

cloth意思是“布、织物、布料”。She showed the cloth to Sarah. (她把布拿给萨拉看。)

letters意思是“文学、学问”。a man of letters (一个文人)

8. rain和rains

rain意思是“雨”。The rain had stopped. (雨已经停了。)

times意思是“时代、时期”。The times are different. (时代不同了。)

10. work和works
