On an overcast morning on Gulangyu islandoff the Xiamen city coastline in South China,a beach attendant goes about his dutiesdragging the plastic paddleboats down to thewater. He seemed so lost in his own reverieand barely noticed me taking his pictureuntil he was almost stepped on me.
