A long the lower reaches ofthe Lijiang River, embracedby the lush mountains ofnortheast Shaoping County inGuangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, isan ancient town named Huangyao. Formedduring the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644),due to its isolated location this place waslong on its own, separate from the worldbeyond. Today, thanks to modern modes ofcommunication, easier vehicular access andincreasing tourism, the world has come toknow Huangyao. Yet, despite that greaterexposure, the venerable town remainspeaceful, still exuding a certain mystique.
