Artist Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) had a legendary life and the most colorful episode of his life was arguably his pilgrimage to Dunhuang in May 1941.

A renowned artist,Zhang resided in the Summer Palace in Beijing in the 1930s.When the July 7 incident of 1937 broke,he disguised himself and sneaked out of Beijing by train and finally reached Sichuan after many twists and turns in his fleeing journey.
