According to the State StatisticsBureau, China's consumerprice index (CPI) jumped by6.9 percent year-on-year last Novem-ber, approaching the high levels seenat the end of 1996. one of the largestareas of increase was the price of grain,which rose by 6.6 percent. There is nodoubt the growth in CPI can be mainlyattributed to soaring food prices andthe diffusion effect of oil price adjust-ments. Large orders for grain exportshave put Chinese grain suppliers undertremendous pressure.
