猜测生词的应试策略

随着英语高考试题中阅读量的增大，考生在阅读时经常碰到未学过的或者未见过的生词或者短语，怎样正确“猜出”它们的意思，对正确解答有关试题起着至关重要的作用。现就如何正确猜测生词，提出以下应试策略，希望对考生有所裨益。

一、根据上下文猜测生词。这是近几年高考英语阅读理解题中占比例逐年上升的一个类型，也是最大的一个类型。如：

1. The schools are reluctant to take time off—even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had trouble getting the day off. （06年高考福建卷A篇阅读）根据下文“即使有票的老师请假也有困难”，可推断出上文的意思应表达“学校不愿意（老师们）请假”。因此reluctant应是“不愿意”的意思。

2. We guarantee that you have nothing to lose if its not for you; let us know within 6 weeks and we will completely reimburse you. （06年高考湖北卷A篇阅读） 这句话的前半部分是说“我们保证你不会有损失”，所以后面应接着说“如果不适合你的话，我们就会把钱退还给你”。因此reimburse you应是“把（你已支付的）钱退还给你”之意。

3. Unlike vitamin C, leadership skills cant be easily swallowed down. They must be carefully cultivated.（05年高考广东卷B篇阅读） 第一句话说“领导技能和维生素C不一样，是不能轻易地咽下去的”。也就是说，“领导技能不是轻而易举地学会的”。因此下一句应该接着说“（领导技能）需要慢慢地培养”。故cultivated应是“培养”之意。

二、根据“对比关系”猜测生词。如：

1.To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively.（07年高考模拟试题第三套A篇阅读）连词and后面是说“好土地精耕细作”因此and前面应是“必须开垦贫瘠的土地”。也就是说，inferior应与good相对，故inferior应是“劣等的、贫瘠的”之意。

2. Maybe it is because of such transparency (透明) by government, rather than the concealment too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French can enjoy la joi de vivre thanks to speed cameras.（烟台市06-07学年度第一学期期末考试B篇阅读）连词词组rather than为“而不是”的意思，所以transparency (透明) 应与concealment相对，故concealment应是“隐藏，隐蔽”之意。

3.The house looked quite normal outside, but inside it was very exotic with fascinating objects on display. （06年高考江西卷B篇阅读）but是转折连词，其前后应是“相对”，构成对比关系。即：normal outside应与exotic inside相对，故exotic应是foreign and unusual 之意。

三、根据“并列关系”猜测生词。如：

The music is sometimes witty and playful, sometimes almost alarming and frightening.（05年高考上海卷完形填空） 由于and 是并列连词，故and 前后的词性及意思应是一致的。由frightening可推知alarming的意思应与其等同，作“令人惊恐的、令人害怕的”之意。

四、根据英语构词法中的“转化”、“派生”（即：“前后缀”法）、“合成”等方法来猜测生词。如：

1.Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you.（05年高考上海卷A篇阅读） 分析句子成分可知，simplify 应是动词。该词是由形容词simple（简单的，简明的）转化而成的动词。故simplify应是“简化，精简，使易懂”之意。

2.Television wildlife programmes have developed to fuel the new trend. （05年高考上海卷D篇阅读） 本句中的fuel 是由名词“燃料”转化而成的动词，作“刺激，支持”解。

3.Each year, diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world. （05年高考上海卷C篇阅读）本句中的inadequate是由adequate加前缀“in”而构成的，与adequate（充足的，适当的）意思相反，作“不充分的，不适当的”解。
