For only the third time ever,the FDA has given the okay for a food to be labeled healthful. Producers may now write on the bottle:“Limited and non-conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating two tablespoons of olive oil each day may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”
Scientists have long thought olive oil may be the reason why heart disease is so rare in Mediterranean areas. In some parts of Greece,the average person consumes over three liters per month of the golden oil,once thought to come from the gods.
The secret to olive oil's magic is a fat called oleic acid. It helps the body move cholesterol through the smallest of blood vessels between cells. Although necessary for our body,cholesterol is the bad guy of heart disease,a tiny Bluto Blotto that clogs arteries. Eating olive oil actually helps reverse this process. So the next time you eat a hamburger,try some olive oil on top. Yum!
